Detailed Syllabus for Each Tier

Tier-I: Objective Computer-Based Test

This is the first screening test. It consists of four sections with a total of 100 questions for 200 marks. The time duration is 60 minutes.

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning (25 Questions - 50 Marks)
This section tests your logical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Analogies: Semantic and Number.
Classification: Figural, Semantic, and Number.

Series: Figural, Alphabet, and Number.
Coding & Decoding: Letter, Number, and Symbol-based.
Puzzles: Venn Diagrams, Syllogism, Statement & Conclusions.
Matrix & Word Formation
Mathematical Operations: BODMAS, Symbol-based operations.
Direction & Distance: Sense Test.
Blood Relations
Clock & Calendars
Visual & Figure-based questions: Mirror Images, Water Images, Embedded Figures, Pattern Completion, Paper Folding & Cutting.

2. General Awareness (25 Questions - 50 Marks)
This section tests your knowledge of current events and static general knowledge.
Current Affairs: National & International importance (last 6-9 months).
History: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern India (focus on Freedom Struggle).
Geography: Indian and World Geography, Physical Geography.
Polity: Indian Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Political System.
Economics: Basic Indian Economy, Budget, Five-Year Plans, Economic Terminology.
Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (up to 10th standard level), important discoveries and inventions.
Static GK: Important Dates, Books & Authors, Awards & Honors, Sports, Defence, Culture, etc.
Miscellaneous: Environment & Ecology (Basic concepts), Computers (Basic terminology).

3. Quantitative Aptitude (25 Questions - 50 Marks)
This section tests your numerical ability and mathematical skills.
Number System: Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio & Proportion.
Simplification: BODMAS, Surds & Indices.
Algebra: Basic identities, Linear Equations.
Percentage, Profit & Loss, Discount
Simple Interest & Compound Interest
Speed, Time & Distance; Time & Work
Mensuration: Area and Volume of 2D and 3D shapes.
Geometry: Lines, Angles, Triangles, Circles, and their properties.
Trigonometry: Basic identities, Heights and Distances.

Statistics & Data Interpretation: Mean, Median, Mode; Interpretation of graphs like Bar Graph, Line Graph, Pie Chart, Tables.

4. English Comprehension (25 Questions - 50 Marks)
This section tests your understanding of the English language.
Reading Comprehension: A passage followed by questions.
Grammar: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks (based on tenses, prepositions, conjunctions).

Vocabulary: Synonyms, Antonyms, One-Word Substitution, Spelling Mistakes.
Sentence Structure: Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect Speech, Sentence Rearrangement (Para Jumbles), Cloze Test.

 

Tier-II: Objective Computer-Based Test

This is a more advanced level test. It consists of multiple papers. The structure can vary, but typically includes:

Paper-I: Quantitative Abilities (100 Questions - 200 Marks)
This is an advanced level of the Quantitative Aptitude section from Tier-I. Topics include Advanced Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and more complex Data Interpretation.

Paper-II: English Language & Comprehension (200 Questions - 200 Marks)
This is an advanced level of the English section from Tier-I. It places a heavier emphasis on vocabulary, advanced grammar rules, and comprehension skills.

Paper-III: Statistics (for Junior Statistical Officer post) (100 Questions - 200 Marks)
Topics: Collection & Representation of Data, Measures of Central Tendency & Dispersion, Probability, Time Series Analysis, Index Numbers, Variance Analysis, etc.

Paper-IV: General Studies (Finance & Economics) (for Assistant Audit Officer post) (100 Questions - 200 Marks)
Topics: Fundamental principles of Economics, Accounting, Auditing, Money & Banking, Public Finance, Government Budget, etc.

Note: You only need to give the papers required for the post(s) you are applying for. Paper-I (Quant) and Paper-II (English) are compulsory for almost all posts.

Tier-III: Descriptive Paper (Pen and Paper Mode)

This tier tests your written English/Hindi skills.
Mode: Offline (Pen and Paper).
Duration: 60 minutes.
Marks: 100 marks.
Topics: You will be asked to write:
Essay (on a current/relevant topic) - around 250-300 words.
Letter/Application (Formal or Informal) - around 150-200 words.
Precis Writing (summarizing a given paragraph) may also be asked.

Tier-IV: Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test

This is not a written exam. It is qualifying in nature.

Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): For the post of Tax Assistant (CBDT & CBIC), you need to have a typing speed of 8,000 Key Depressions per Hour (KDPH) on a computer.
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): For some posts, this test checks your proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Slide Generation.

Key Preparation Tips for a SSC CGL Batch

1.  Know the Syllabus & Exam Pattern: This is your roadmap. Refer to it constantly.
2.  Focus on Basics: For Quant and Reasoning, clear your basic concepts first.
3.  Practice Mock Tests: This is the most crucial part. It helps with time management and identifying weak areas.
4.  Revise Regularly: General Awareness and Vocabulary need constant revision.
5.  Analyze Previous Year Papers: They give you a clear idea about the important topics and the difficulty level.
